Browser Extension Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026
This policy applies to the NiceTry Chrome and Safari browser extensions.

1. What the Extension Does

The NiceTry browser extension detects AI-generated images as you browse the web. When you right-click an image, click a scan overlay badge, or use the extension popup, NiceTry analyzes the image and tells you whether it appears to be AI-generated, authentic, or inconclusive.

2. Data Collection

Image URLs

When you scan an image, the URL of that image is sent to our server for AI detection analysis. We use this URL to retrieve and analyze the image. Image URLs from scans are stored in your scan history so you can review past results.

Account Information

If you sign in to NiceTry through the extension, your authentication token is stored locally in the browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local) to keep you signed in. This token is never shared with third parties.

Scan Results

The results of your scans (AI-generated, authentic, or inconclusive) along with confidence scores are stored in your account's scan history on our servers.

Scan History Cache

Recent scan results may be cached locally in chrome.storage.local for faster access. This cache stays on your device and is cleared when you uninstall the extension.

What we do NOT collect: We do not collect your browsing history, the content of web pages you visit, personal files, passwords, or any data from pages where you do not actively initiate a scan. No personal data is sold or shared for advertising purposes.

3. Data Storage

Data is stored in two locations:

On Your Device (Local)

  • Authentication token: Stored in chrome.storage.local to keep you signed in
  • Extension settings: Your scan preferences and display options
  • Scan history cache: Recent results cached for quick access

On Our Servers

  • Scan history: Stored on Supabase (hosted by AWS) with row-level security
  • Scan results: Verdict, confidence score, and timestamp for each scan
  • We do not store the actual images — only the URL and scan result

All communication between the extension and our servers uses HTTPS encryption.

4. Data Transmission

When you initiate a scan, data flows as follows:

  • The image URL is sent from your browser to the NiceTry backend (a Supabase Edge Function)
  • Our backend forwards the image to Sightengine for AI-generated content detection analysis
  • Sightengine processes the image in real time and returns a detection result
  • The result is sent back to your browser and saved to your scan history

Important: Images are processed in real time and are NOT permanently stored by NiceTry or Sightengine. Only the scan result (verdict and confidence score) is retained.

5. Third-Party Services

The extension relies on the following third-party services:

  • Sightengine — AI-generated image and deepfake detection. Receives image URLs for analysis when you initiate a scan. Sightengine processes images and returns detection results. Images are not stored by Sightengine after processing. Sightengine Privacy Policy
  • Supabase — Authentication and data storage. Manages your NiceTry account, stores scan history, and handles secure communication between the extension and our backend. Supabase Privacy Policy

No data is shared with any other third party. We do not use analytics, advertising, or tracking services in the extension.

6. Host Permissions — Why <all_urls> Is Required

The NiceTry extension requests permission to run on all websites (<all_urls>). This broad permission is required because:

  • AI-generated images can appear on any website — social media platforms, news sites, forums, messaging apps, image boards, blogs, and more
  • The extension injects small overlay scan badges on images so you can scan them with one click
  • Without access to all URLs, the extension cannot fulfill its core purpose of detecting AI-generated content wherever you encounter it on the web

What this permission does NOT do: The extension does not read, collect, or transmit the content of web pages. It does not track which websites you visit. It only interacts with images on the page, and only processes them when you actively initiate a scan.

7. Other Permissions

  • activeTab: Allows the extension to interact with the page you're currently viewing when you click the extension icon. Used to detect images on the page for scanning.
  • storage: Stores your authentication token and extension settings locally in your browser. This data stays on your device.
  • contextMenus: Adds a "Scan with NiceTry" option to your right-click menu so you can quickly scan any image.

8. How We Use Your Data

  • Image URLs are sent to our secure server for AI-generated content detection analysis
  • Scan results are stored in your account history so you can review past scans
  • We enforce scan limits based on your subscription tier
  • We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than providing the NiceTry AI detection service
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for marketing or advertising purposes

9. Data Deletion

You can delete your data at any time:

  • Extension data: Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data (auth token, settings, cache)
  • Scan history: You can request deletion of your scan history by contacting us at support@nicetry.com
  • Account deletion: You can delete your entire NiceTry account from the Settings page on nicetry.com, which removes all associated data

10. Children's Privacy

NiceTry is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy periodically. The "Last Updated" date above reflects the most recent version. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
